Difference between material planning and material control

1. Material planning

In many cases, material planning refers to MRP in the narrow sense, focusing on calculating material demand according to production plans and ensuring complete material sets. For example, it calculates parts demand based on daily or weekly production plans, combines that with inventory and goods in transit, works out the gap, and finally generates purchasing suggestions. The main goal of material planning is to align material demand with production demand through supply and demand matching at the material level, ensure material availability, and calculate demand accurately, in other words, what is needed and how much is needed. 2. Material control

By contrast, material control has a more comprehensive management dimension. In addition to MRP in the narrow sense, it should focus more on inventory strategy formulation, purchasing follow-up, exception scheduling, and slow-moving material handling. For example, for certain materials it can generate purchasing suggestions according to replenishment logic set by inventory strategies, continuously monitor abnormalities in material turnover rates, dynamically adjust purchasing strategies, and coordinate with suppliers to handle urgent shortages. The main goal of material control is to ensure overall optimization of resources from the material level and balance cost and risk through dynamic management of material supply and inventory. In short, it is about managing supply well, namely how to supply and how to store.

Main differences

Different focus: The focus of material planning is planning, that is, deciding when to purchase which materials and in what quantity based on demand forecasts and production capacity. The focus of material control is control, that is, supervising the actual flow of materials to ensure that they arrive at the right place at the right time.

Time dimension: Material planning is more future-oriented, carrying out demand forecasting and long-term planning, while material control pays more attention to current operations and short-term adjustments.

Functional difference: Material planning mainly solves the question of what should be done, while material control is concerned with how to do it well.
