How Can ERP and MES Systems Achieve Product Quality Traceability?

Published on: 2025-07-28

How can ERP and MES systems achieve product quality traceability? The collaboration between ERP systems and MES systems is the core of realizing full-process quality traceability. Through data interconnection and process linkage, the two systems build a complete quality traceability chain from raw material procurement to finished product delivery and even after-sales service.

How Can ERP and MES Systems Achieve Product Quality Traceability

1. Build Traceability Data Sources

The basis of quality traceability is complete collection of full-process data. ERP systems and MES systems have clear divisions of responsibility, covering supply chain layer data and production layer data respectively, and achieve seamless connection through system integration.

1. ERP Systems Collect Supply Chain Data

Raw material and component information: including supplier information such as name, qualifications and quality records, purchase order number, material batch number, incoming inspection reports, inventory location information and more.

Production planning and order data: production work order number, product model, planned output, corresponding BOM, or bill of materials, and scheduling time, all serving as the main line for production traceability.

Finished product and sales data: finished product batch number or serial number, warehousing time, sales order number, customer information, shipping time, logistics tracking number and so on, connecting production to delivery.

2. MES Systems Collect Production Execution and Process Data

Production process data:

Process information: process number, processing time, equipment used, including equipment number, maintenance records, inspection records and consumable-parts records, operators, including employee number and qualifications, and process parameters such as temperature, pressure, rotational speed, current and voltage collected in real time.

Quality inspection data: first-piece inspection, patrol inspection, process inspection, final inspection including dimensions, appearance and performance test values, and records of nonconforming product handling such as rework, scrapping and concession acceptance.

Material flow data: batch numbers of raw materials drawn for production, linked to ERP data for receipts, issues and inventory, plus semi-finished product transfer records, including time and quantity from one process to the next.

Unique identification linkage: through barcode, RFID or QR code technology, semi-finished and finished products are assigned batch identifiers or managed by serial number, either by batch or by one item one code, and bound to ERP production work order numbers and material batch numbers.

2. Data Association: Build a Full-Chain Traceability Network

ERP systems and MES systems associate scattered data through batch numbers, serial numbers and order numbers, forming a complete chain from raw materials and production to finished products and customers.

3. Forward and Reverse Traceability

Based on associated data, ERP and MES systems can realize both forward traceability, from source to finished product, and reverse traceability, from problematic finished product back to the source, so that quality issues can be located quickly.

1. Forward Traceability

If a certain batch of materials from a supplier has a quality problem, the ERP system can query the warehousing batch to identify the production work orders where that batch of materials was actually used. The MES system can then query the semi-finished and finished product batches produced from those materials according to the production work order number, and further trace the inventory status and shipped customers of the corresponding product batches.

2. Reverse Traceability

When a customer reports a product quality problem, the ERP system can use the shipment batch from the sales order to reversely query the corresponding production work order information, trace the processing data and inspection data during production, as well as raw material batches and suppliers. If the issue is caused by processing, other finished products can be checked simultaneously for similar problems. If the issue is caused by materials, the trace can go back to the supplier to determine responsibility and compensation.

ERP and MES Systems Interconnect and Interoperate

Basic data must be 100% accurate and have only one unique source. Once MES production data and ERP system data are interconnected and a problem occurs, the systems can respond immediately and freeze related production tasks, inventory and procurement actions.

How Can ERP and MES Systems Achieve Product Quality Traceability

Overall, the core of quality traceability lies in data interconnection and process linkage. ERP systems provide supply chain data, and MES systems provide on-site production process data. Through batches and serial numbers, they form full-chain data and achieve the goal of wherever a problem occurs, it can be traced back there, thereby providing customers' products with full-process quality assurance.
